New Program Recognizes Safe Workplaces An annual award program launched by the Texas Mutual Insurance Company loss prevention department in 2006 recognizes policyholders that show a commitment to workplace safety. One hundred and one policyholders received an award under the program this summer.
Loss ratio, premium size and hazard class are factors in qualifying for an award. Winners receive either a trophy or framed certificate. For CFAN Company, a San Marcos-based manufacturer of jet engine blades, the award provided further confirmation that its safety program is on the right track. CFAN was recently recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for its safety efforts. The company shared the good news about its Texas Mutual® award with staff during a monthly, all-employee meeting. “I think this program says a lot about Texas Mutual’s commitment to recognizing employers that are doing the right things in terms of safety,” said Don Vigil, environmental, health and safety manager at CFAN. “We’ve always stressed to our employees that safety is just as important as quality and production. This award is a nice way to show them that they are doing what we ask them to do.” Companies that combine recognition with employee involvement in the safety program can see remarkable improvements in their safety record. The San Antonio Zoo, another Texas Mutual® award winner, formed a safety committee that includes employee representatives from each department. The committee meets monthly to discuss safety hazards, recognize employees who practice safe behaviors and review accidents to help ensure they don’t happen again. “We want employees to feel comfortable approaching the committee when they see hazards around the zoo,” said Jo Luecht-Medlin, human resources supervisor at the San Antonio Zoo. “Our employees understand that we don’t just focus on safety to save money on claims. We genuinely care about them, and we don’t want them to get hurt.” Policyholders can visit the safety resource center for tools to help them improve their safety programs. Policyholders who are not registered to use Texas Mutual® online services should complete the free, online registration form.
