President's Message
Make Examples of Supervisors

Texas Mutual president
Russell R. Oliver
A Canadian workers' compensation insurance carrier recently ran an ad campaign that showed graphic images of severed limbs and other work-related injuries. The message: Workplace accidents can carry tragic consequences. The tagline: Work Safe. For Life.
Texas Mutual Insurance Company takes a more conservative approach to promoting safety, but the message is the same. Safety should be part of every company's day-to-day operations. It should be a value that everyone in the organization embraces. You should encourage your employees to think about working safely all day, every day.
The process starts with supervisors. At most companies, supervisors have more daily contact with employees than any other level of management. That means they are in the best position to influence employees' behaviors.
Make sure supervisors follow safety procedures, even if it means taking a little longer to complete a task. Stress the importance of participating in safety meetings, rewarding safe behavior and correcting workplace hazards. Teach supervisors the unique challenges of keeping non-English speaking and teenage workers safe on the job.
Texas Mutual Insurance Company provides tools that can help your supervisors learn more about workplace safety. Our safety resource center includes free safety training material and interactive tools. Our free, statewide workers' comp workshops include a safety presentation created by our loss prevention consultants. The workshops only take a few hours out of the work day, and the potential payoff makes them well worth the time.
I want to issue a challenge to all of our policyholders. Make safety as important as quality and production in your company. Give supervisors the tools they need to change employees' attitudes about safety. Ultimately, you may see improvements in quality and production as you reduce workplace accidents.
