Tips for Launching a CSR Program

Launching a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program does not have to be complicated. In fact, your company is probably already doing things that improve the quality of life for your stakeholders. Here are some tips for creating a CSR program or improving an existing program.

Decide why you’re doing it
Some companies launch a CSR program to improve their image, comply with regulatory requirements, differentiate themselves from the competition, or recruit socially conscious job candidates. Others simply believe it is the right thing to do. Decide why you are embracing CSR. Then, invest in projects that help you meet your goals.

Find out what your stakeholders think
Stakeholders include your employees, customers and anyone else who is affected by your operations. Ask them what they think a socially responsible organization looks like. Use their feedback to direct your resources where they will make an impact.

Go beyond dollars and cents
CSR is about more than writing a check to a local charitable organization. Give your employees opportunities to donate their time and talent in their communities.

Focus your resources
You can increase your impact by focusing on a handful of worthy projects. Some companies direct their resources where their activities overlap public need. For example, as a workers’ comp carrier, Texas Mutual works hard to minimize the consequences of on-the-job accidents. Our college scholarship program helps victims and their families build a better future.

Get in it for the long haul
CSR is an ongoing commitment to doing business responsibly. It should not lose momentum after a change in leadership or when it ceases to be convenient. Invest your resources in projects that produce long-term benefits for your stakeholders.
