April 16, 2007 began like any other day for most Virginia Tech University students and staff. They woke up at the usual time, took their normal route to campus and settled in for another day of higher learning. That morning, a student opened fire, killing 32 and wounding many more before turning the gun on himself. In the wake of this terrible tragedy, it is human nature to point to the “what ifs.” What if stricter gun laws had prevented the student from buying a weapon? What if the university had suspended him after receiving reports of his suicidal thoughts and habit of stalking female peers? What if the health care system had forced him to get help for his emotional problems? The truth is that there is no sure way to prevent workplace violence. It can happen to any of us, regardless of our industry, suddenly and without warning. We can, however, take steps to reduce the potential for violence. A zero tolerance policy is crucial to any workplace violence prevention program. Put the policy in writing, and give every employee a copy at least once a year. Make it clear that the company will not tolerate any form of hostile or harmful behavior. Define the consequences for violating the policy. Require prompt reporting of violence and threats, and assure employees that you will maintain their confidentiality whenever possible. Texas Mutual Insurance Company combines its zero tolerance policy with an assistance program for its employees and their family members. The free program offers confidential counseling for family and financial problems, substance abuse, depression, anxiety and other issues. We want to help all of our policyholders create a safe, productive workplace. Our safety resource center includes more information on preventing workplace violence, as well as other material that can help you improve your safety program. Together, we can help ensure that every day is a typical day at the office.
