Dividends: What do they mean to you?

In business, some initiatives sell themselves. Take Texas Mutual Insurance Company's 2008 dividend plan.

Most would agree that pumping $150 million into the Texas economy is a good idea. By paying dividends, we are helping our policyholders build their businesses for the future. We are also making two important statements about Texas Mutual.

First, we are financially strong and prepared to serve you far into the future. That is important because the workers' comp market is cyclical.

During the past few years, carriers have returned to the market to compete for your business. History has proven that many of them will eventually abandon Texas when the market ceases to be profitable.

When they do, Texas Mutual will still be here to help you prevent accidents, control your claim costs, return injured workers to the job and fight fraud.

Second, our track record for paying dividends shows that we are committed to sharing our success when financial conditions allow. We have distributed more than $595 million in individual policyholder dividends since 1999. Many policyholders have also qualified for additional dividends as members of a safety group.

In our cover story, you will hear from three policyholders who earned a dividend this summer. San Miguel Electric, Fred Haas Interests and Workman Commercial Construction have unique stories, but they also have one thing in common: They know that dividends are not an entitlement.

Each of these policyholders invested the time and resources to improve their safety programs and control their claim costs. For their efforts, they have earned a combined $800,000 in dividends during the past seven years. The return on their premium was a nice reward. The real payoff, however, was in the number of workers who went home injury-free every day.

On behalf of your agent and our management, staff and board of directors, thank you for your business. We look forward to many more years of mutual success.
