Follow Pioneer's Tips for a Safer Workplace

Pioneer Contract Services Inc. didn’t make safety part of their culture overnight. It took a long-term commitment from management, as well as buy-in at all levels of the organization.

Any policyholder, regardless of industry, can use these tips to make a safer workplace.

Empower employees. Ask front-line employees to help plan the safety program and continuously improve it. Empower them to stop any operation they feel is unsafe. Recognize them when they practice safe behaviors, and discipline them when they don’t.

Consider drug testing. Pioneer conducts pre-hire, probable cause, random and post-accident drug testing. Consult an attorney before you start testing for substances to ensure you follow the law.

Hire the right people. Conduct face-to-face interviews, check references and criminal history, introduce the substance abuse policy, and require pre-employment physicals.

Put employees on the right path. Pioneer’s firstday, new-employee orientation includes safety training designed around specific job tasks.

Commit the resources. Hold safety meetings, conduct regularly scheduled safety training, and provide hard hats, goggles, steel-toed boots and other relevant personal protective equipment.

Set an example. Management, including the company owner, should follow the same safety rules as everyone else.

Keep safety on their minds. Every day, Pioneer employees pass a large banner that reads, “If It Isn’t Safe, Don’t Do It; If It Isn’t Right, Don’t Do It.” The company’s moving boxes bear the same slogan.
