In 1901, geologist Anthony Lucas struck oil at Spindletop near Beaumont. At 100,000 barrels a day, Spindletop tripled U.S. oil production and went down as the largest gusher of its time. Lucas’ discovery sent Texas into the industrial age, which eventually spawned our first workers’ compensation system. In the late 1980s, the system was plagued by high costs, an overloaded insurer of last resort and other problems too numerous to describe here. That is why the Texas Legislature created Texas Mutual Insurance Company in 1991. Our primary mission: to provide a stable, affordable source of workers’ comp coverage for all Texas employers. During our first 15 years of service to Texas, we have embraced that mission wholeheartedly. Our fraud investigators have worked tirelessly to stop those who cheat the system and steal money from honest employers like you. Our loss prevention consultants and interactive, online tools have helped policyholders prevent on-the-job injuries. When accidents have happened, our claim staff has helped injured workers get well and back on the job. When we have succeeded, we have shared our success with loyal policyholders who have helped us control premiums by focusing on safety. Through our dividend programs, we have returned over $320 million, including a company-record $100 million this year. We don’t know what the future holds for the Texas workers’ comp system, but we do know that there are a few things you can count on. When other insurance carriers reduce their services or abandon you altogether, Texas Mutual Insurance Company will be here for you and your injured workers. We will continue working hard to keep premiums affordable by fighting fraud, providing expert accident prevention services and helping control the costs of on-the-job injuries. We will launch new services, like our new workers’ comp health care network option, to meet your changing needs. Together, we can make Texas a safer, more productive place to work and do business. We at Texas Mutual Insurance Company will dedicate ourselves to that effort for the next 15 years and beyond because we’re here for Texas, and we’re here to stay.
