Chuy’s Serves Up Quick Safety Tips

Most states take pride in at least one thing that is uniquely theirs. Wisconsin has cheese, Maine has lobster, and for the better part of three decades, Texas has had Chuy’s restaurants all to itself.

Chuy’s opened in 1982 in an abandoned barbeque restaurant on Barton Springs Road in Austin. Today, it has 18 locations across Texas, two in Tennessee, one in Alabama and one in Kentucky, with more outposts planned across the South.

It seems the “Big as Yo’ Face Burrito” is no longer one of Texas’ best-kept secrets.

Of course, with expansion come employees, and with employees come increased risks of on-the-job injuries. But that didn’t stop Chuy’s from earning Texas Mutual’s annual safety award this fall.

If you want to achieve similar success with your safety program, follow these tips, courtesy of Chuy’s Human Resources Director Marcia Williams.

Show and tell. Management explains and, more importantly, demonstrates the safe way to cut, chop, maintain equipment and lift heavy loads.

Inspect the work area. Monthly safety audits provide the opportunity to check the work area for physical hazards, faulty equipment and unsafe behaviors.

Speak your employees’ language. Chuy’s provides all of its training materials, including safety materials, in English and Spanish. Many of the materials in the free safety resource center at texasmutual.com are available in both languages.

Watch for trends. Are employees who work in certain positions or areas of the facility repeatedly suffering the same injuries? Those trends might be coincidences, or they might indicate hazards or unsafe behaviors you need to correct. Use the loss run and claim detail tool at texasmutual.com to review your accidents by location, injured body part and cause of injury.

Involve employees. Safety programs dictated from the top usually fail. Chuy’s encourages employee input and accountability for safety. The organization works hard to create an environment of trust in which employees feel comfortable reporting unsafe conditions.
