Participating in the
Legislative Process

There are a number of ways that individuals can get involved in the legislative process. We've provided some tips on how you can help improve the workers' compensation system.

Become active in your association. Many trade groups are active in the legislative process, including many Texas Mutual® Safety Groups and other organizations.

Write or email your legislator. Postal addresses and email links for House members are located on the information page for each individual member. Postal addresses and email links for Senators are also found on the information page for each individual member. Click here to find out who represents you.

Meet with your legislator and/or their staff on your issue. Use the House and Senate directories to locate your legislator's Capitol and district offices. The Senate offers "advocacy etiquette" tips to keep in mind when discussing issues with your legislator.

Contact committee members on a committee of interest. The House and Senate committee information pages contain links to individual committees. There, you can find out each committee's jurisdiction and see a list of the committee members.

Provide oral/written testimony on legislation that affects you. You can also access upcoming schedules for committee hearings from the committee information pages. The schedules will include the date, time and location of the meeting, along with a list of the bills to be heard at the meeting. You can also find out if a bill has been set for hearing by entering the bill number in the "Search Legislation" box at Texas Legislature Online. This will take you to a list of bill actions.

If a bill has been set for committee hearing, it will be reflected here. If you've signed up for the free MyTLO service at Texas Legislature Online, you will receive an email notification if action has been taken on your selected bills.
