Who we are
The Texas Legislature chartered Austin-based Texas Mutual Insurance Company in 1991 and charged it with providing a stable, competitive source of workers’ compensation insurance for Texas employers. We are not a state agency, and we do not accept state funding. Click here for more information about our history.
How we are different
We only write workers’ compensation insurance, and we only serve Texas-based employers and their employees.
Corporate structure
Texas Mutual is lead by its senior leadership and a nine-member board of directors. The governor, with the advice and consent of the Texas Senate, appoints five of the nine directors, including the chair. Our policyholders elect the other four members.
Market share
Texas Mutual writes about 32 percent of our state’s workers’ compensation market, more than any other carrier. About 50,000 employers are covered by a Texas Mutual policy. In 2010, we wrote $609 million in premiums.
Economic impact
By the end of 2011, we will have paid more than $1 billion in policyholder dividends. The money has helped Texas businesses build for the future.
Community involvement
Our employees have donated more than $1.6 million to charitable organizations through our annual United Way campaign since 1993, including $134,047 in 2010. Many also lend their time and talent to charitable causes throughout the year.
