Knowledge: Your Most Valuable Asset

This summer, the Insurance Journal asked young agents what they like most about their job. Relationships, flexibility and helping people were common themes. But for me, one response demonstrates what I believe being an agent is all about.

“I have learned that knowledge is my absolute best-selling feature. I do everything I can to learn insurance coverage. I like being an expert and a teacher.”

This young agent gets it. He understands that your clients trust you to guide their insurance purchasing decisions. You have a responsibility to them and their injured workers. When it comes to protecting them from the consequences of workplace injuries, there is no better coverage than workers’ compensation.

You may have heard about occupational accident policies that are being touted as viable substitutes for workers’ compensation. I caution you to look at each client’s unique situation carefully before you steer them toward one of these policies. Pay special attention to the client’s loss exposure and injured workers who suffer catastrophic injuries.

Occupational accident policies’ limitations shine in cases of severe on-the-job accidents. They often put a cap on injured workers’ benefits and refuse to cover some illnesses, injuries and diseases. They also leave employers vulnerable to potentially costly lawsuits arising from workplace injuries. In those cases, your E&O coverage could come into question.

Texas Mutual has launched a campaign to educate employers about the advantages of choosing workers’ compensation. The company needs agents’ help.

We posted free educational material on our website. I encourage you to visit www.texasmutual.com/agents/marketing.shtm and download the “Don’t Dare to Go Bare” fact sheet, as well as a convenient chart showing the differences between workers’ compensation and occupational accident policies.
