Texas Mutual safety grants top $15.6 million
This summer, Texas businesses made it clear how much they value workplace safety. When our 2026 safety grant applications opened on July 14, we reached the application limit in just 45 minutes.
In total, we invested more than $1.8 million in this year’s safety grants, helping over 1,200 policyholders purchase equipment to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses. That brings our total investment since the program began in 2016 to more than $15.6 million.
Where the funding went
Each approved policyholder received $1,500 toward the approved safety equipment listed in their application, including ergonomic, safety, disease and illness prevention and industrial hygiene equipment. This year's most common investments included:
- Wearable protection (about 50%): Personal protective equipment made up about half of all purchases. Gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility vests, hard hats and protective footwear topped the list, along with fall protection and respirators.
- Health and comfort (about 18%): Reducing strain and fatigue appeared to be top of mind with ergonomic upgrades like chairs and lifting aids. Policyholders also invested in air filtration and heat illness prevention supplies, such as cooling fans and hydration products.
- Preparedness for the unexpected (about 12%): Nearly 300 policyholders purchased first-aid kits, and others added automated external defibrillators (AEDs), eyewash stations and machine-guarding equipment.
Every one of these purchases is a step toward fewer injuries and more employees going home healthy at the end of the day.
A program that puts people first
A 45-minute window says a lot about the employers we serve. Texas businesses aren't waiting for an injury to invest in safety. They're planning ahead, budgeting for protection and lining up the moment funding opens.
"Our safety grant offering is one of the most direct ways we can help employers protect their people,” said Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services. “A $1,500 grant buys fall protection for a roofing crew, appropriate PPE for a shop or ergonomic workstations for an office team. For many of our policyholders, especially small businesses, that money gets important equipment in place sooner. We're proud to invest in the businesses that make Texas safer."
Our commitment goes beyond grants
Safety grants are just one way we partner with our policyholders on workplace safety. Year-round, we offer free resources and expert support, including:
- A safety and employer resources catalog with safety manuals, training guides, return-to-work programs and more
- An e-Learning system featuring hundreds of interactive safety courses
- Safety consultants across the state, ready to help with safety questions and concerns
