President & CEO
Richard Gergasko joined Texas Mutual as president in 2013. He was president and COO of SeaBright Insurance Company from 2009 to 2013, and he served as executive vice president of operations for the company from 2003 to 2009. Mr. Gergasko had a long career in various positions in the workers' compensation insurance industry prior to that. He is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He has a Bachelor of Arts in statistics from Rutgers College.
Chief Operating Officer
Jeanette Ward joined Texas Mutual in 1993 after earning her Bachelor of Arts in government from the University of Texas at Austin. She has since climbed the company's ranks, serving as operations analyst to the chief operating officer; senior manager of corporate planning, budget and accounting; vice president of claim and information services; vice president of claim support services; and most recently, senior vice president of policyholder services. As COO, Ms. Ward is responsible for policyholder services, underwriting, information technology, digital innovation & solutions and marketing & customer engagement.
Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
Mike Barron is a certified public accountant with over 40 years of experience in accounting and financial management. Prior to joining Texas Mutual in 2003, he spent over 18 years with international accounting and consulting firms. Additionally, he served as the CFO of a major pension fund and the Deputy Treasurer for the State of Texas. Mr. Barron was a founding member of the board of directors of Sendero Health Plans, a Central Texas community-based HMO, and previously served on the boards of The Easter Seal Society and Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and a member of the American Institute of CPAs.
Senior Vice President, Human Resources
After graduating from the University of Texas with honors, Lynette Caldwell spent eight years in HR leadership positions at TN Technologies Inc. She joined Texas Mutual in 1999, and has served as senior manager of human resources, senior manager of compensation/benefits and vice president of human resources. Ms. Caldwell is responsible for ensuring human resource strategies, policies and practices that support the company’s mission and values as well as enhance organizational performance and employee engagement. She is a senior certified professional in human resources, Kids’ Chance of Texas board member, and former advisor/chair of the American Association of State Compensation Insurance Funds Human Resources Committee.
Senior Vice President, Policyholder Services
Kim Haugaard joined Texas Mutual in November 2004 and was responsible for leading the development of the first medical network in the Texas workers’ compensation system. Most recently, he directed the implementation of WorkWell, TX, Texas Mutual’s health care network. Mr. Haugaard has been at the forefront of numerous medical cost containment strategies and worked closely with the claims operations management team on training, process and system initiatives.
Chief Data Officer
Michael Hernandez joined Texas Mutual in 2018 as chief data officer, after serving in the same role at CoBank. Mr. Hernandez has held senior roles in data strategy at Crowe Horwath LLP and PNC Financial Services. He has spoken at national industry conferences discussing finance transformation and enterprise data management. Mr. Hernandez holds a Bachelor of Science from Penn State University, and a Master of Business Administration from Ohio University.
Senior Vice President, Investments
Randy Johnson joined Texas Mutual Insurance Company in 1995. His investments team is responsible for managing the company's more than
$7 billion diversified investment portfolio. Mr. Johnson is a University of Texas graduate who has over 25 years of senior-level investment, financial and management experience. He is a certified public accountant and a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Texas Society of CPAs.
Senior Vice President & General Counsel
Mary Nichols joined Texas Mutual Insurance Company in 1995 as general counsel. She has over 25 years of legal expertise. Before joining the company, Ms. Nichols practiced law with Vinson & Elkins LLP, where she started as a public finance attorney and later moved into insurance-related litigation. She received her J.D. with honors from the University of Texas, and she is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Travis County Bar Association. She is rated AV, the highest rating designated by Martindale-Hubbell.
Jo Betsy Norton,
Senior Vice President, Public Affairs
Jo Betsy Norton joined Texas Mutual in 2007 and has over 20 years of experience in corporate public affairs representing insurance companies at the local, state and federal levels. Before joining the private sector, Ms. Norton was appointed by Governor George W. Bush to serve as a commissioner on the Texas Employment Commission and the Texas Workforce Commission. She serves as chair of the Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association, is chair of TXBIZ Votes and is on the board and executive committee of the Texas Association of Business.
Senior Vice President & Special Counsel, Enterprise Affairs
Paul Schlaud joined Texas Mutual in 2019 after working with the company as outside counsel for over 15 years. Mr. Schlaud oversees corporate strategy and innovation, risk management, marketing and community affairs, and the agile teams at Texas Mutual. He began his career as a law clerk to Judge Merrick Garland, became a litigation associate at Vinson & Elkins and was later a founding partner of Reeves and Brightwell LLP. He received his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he also served as editor for the Harvard Law Review. He is board certified in Civil Appellate Law and is a member of the American Law Institute.
Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer
Mike Stubblefield joined Texas Mutual in 2019 with more than 20 years of experience as a business-driven leader in the information technology and financial services industries. Mr. Stubblefield previously served as the chief information officer for DST Systems where he led the systems transformation of over 300 applications. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in finance and management from the University of Houston.
Senior Vice President & General Auditor
Elise Teeter joined Texas Mutual in 2007 as a senior auditor and 10 years later was promoted to VP general auditor. Prior to Texas Mutual, she held various positions in marketing, business operations and internal audit. Ms. Teeter holds a Bachelor of Arts from UT Austin and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Dallas. Ms. Teeter is a certified internal auditor, certified fraud examiner and a certified information systems auditor. She is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and ISACA.
Ron Simmons, Chairman • appointed
Mr. Simmons, Carrollton, Texas, was appointed to Texas Mutual’s board of directors in 2019. He is chairman of the Retirement Advisors of America and a former state representative for District 65. He is a former board member of the American Legislative Exchange Council and has served on the Education Commission of the States. Additionally, he is the former vice chairman of the Autism Society of America. Mr. Simmons received a Bachelor of Arts in business from Dallas Baptist University.
Bernie Francis, Vice Chair • elected
Mr. Francis, Carrollton, Texas, was elected to Texas Mutual Insurance Company's board of directors in 2009. He is the owner and CEO of Addison-based Business Control Systems LP and Dallas-based First Class Caregivers Inc. He is a member of the board of Senior Quality Lifestyles Corp. and of Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas. Mr. Francis serves on the executive committee of the Texas Business Leadership Council. He is past chairman of the Texas State University System board of regents and former chairman of the Texas State Technical College board of regents. He served three terms on the Carrollton City Council in the 1990s.
Kristi Koncaba, Secretary • appointed
Ms. Koncaba was appointed to Texas Mutual’s board of directors in 2018. She has over 18 years of experience in commercial banking, including co-founding both Family Bancorp Inc. and Friendswood Capital Corporation. Friendswood is the bank-holding company for Texan Bank, where she serves as president and chief operating officer.
She is the past chair of the Bay Area YMCA advisory board and serves on the boards of Texan Bank, Friendswood Capital Corporation and the Texas Bankers Association Foundation. She is executive officer of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and serves on the board of the South Belt–Ellington Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Koncaba was a 2013 Change Magazine Women Creating Change honoree, a University of Houston–Clear Lake Early Achievement Award recipient, a 2016 Perry Family YMCA Volunteer of the Year, a 2019 Houston Business Journal–Women Who Mean Business Outstanding Leader in Finance honoree, and a 2018 University of Houston Cougar 100 honoree.
Brett Flagg • appointed
Mr. Flagg, Frisco, Texas was appointed to Texas Mutual’s board of directors in 2019. He has been a practicing attorney in Texas for 35 years. He served as a partner in the largest law firm in Dallas before establishing his own firm, Flagg Law Group PC. His practice focuses on estate planning, asset protection, probate and general business counsel for high net worth entrepreneurs. Mr. Flagg currently serves as an elder at Stonebriar Community Church and a member of the board of directors of e3 Partners Ministry/I Am Second. He is a past chairman of the Trinity Christian Academy board in Addison, Texas and a former member of the board of directors of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce and the Baptist Church Loan Corporation. He earned a bachelor's in business administration and law degree from Baylor University, and an LLM Taxation degree from Georgetown University.
Linda Foster-Smith • appointed
Ms. Foster-Smith, Georgetown, Texas, was appointed to Texas Mutual Insurance Company's board of directors in 2008. She is retired from AT&T, where she served for 37 years, the last 15 years as director of external affairs for the Permian Basin. Ms. Foster-Smith is a former member of the board of trustees for the Midland Independent School District, a former member and chairwoman of the Midland Chamber of Commerce, and former board chairwoman and campaign chairwoman for the United Way of Midland. She is former board secretary for the Permian Basin Community Center and past board president of the Midland Independent School District's Educational Foundation.
Steve Oldham • elected
Mr. Oldham, Houston, Texas, joined Texas Mutual’s board of directors in 2019. He is a partner at Autumn Lane Advisors, a boutique wealth management firm, and serves as a board director for Central Bank-Houston, Signal Peak Silica LLC and Maggie Louise Confections Inc. In addition, Mr. Oldham serves as treasurer on the executive board of the Sam Houston Area Council – Boy Scouts of America, and is a CFA charter holder.
Eric Oliver • elected
Mr. Oliver, Abilene, Texas, was elected to Texas Mutual Insurance Company's board of directors in 2009. He is founder and president of Softvest LP in Abilene; president of Midland Map Co. LLC in Midland; founder and principal of TenTex Music LLC in Nashville; founder and principal of Geologic Research Centers LLC, with a library in Abilene; and founder and owner of Caprock Title Co. in Midland. Mr. Oliver is chairman of Midland-based AMEN Properties Inc., and he serves on the board of ACIMCO, Abilene Christian University's endowment management company. He is a former member of the Abilene Community Foundation's investment committee.
Danny Phillips • elected
Mr. Phillips, Dallas/Fort Worth, was elected to Texas Mutual's board of directors in 2012. He manages his own financial investments, and he is also the owner of the Diamond P. Ranch, a registered Texas Longhorn cattle operation. In addition, Mr. Phillips serves as board chairman for the Fortress Youth Development Center in Fort Worth, and he serves on the board of regents at Pepperdine University, the investment board of Abilene Christian University, the board of directors of Taigan.com, and the board of directors of Ministry Ventures.
John Swanson • appointed
Mr. Swanson, Frisco, Texas, was appointed to Texas Mutual's board of directors in 2012 and reappointed in 2018. He has nearly 20 years of corporate finance experience. He currently serves as president and CEO of Utica Resource Venture LLC. Mr. Swanson is also a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, past technical reviewer of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and a past trainer for Junior Achievement of Midland.
