MSHA publishes final rule on silica dust exposure

MSHA issued a final rule that reduces miners' allowable crystalline silica exposure to 50 micrograms per cubic meter over an 8-hour shift and requires corrective actions if exceeded. The rule also requires mine operators to use dust control measures and monitoring to prevent silica overexposure and establish health programs with free screenings. Additionally, the rule introduces a new, more protective standard for respiratory equipment intended to better protect miners from various airborne hazards.

This year's Workers Memorial Day on April 28 highlights the ongoing issue of workplace safety in the U.S. While work-related deaths have decreased significantly since 1970, there were still an estimated 15 deaths per day in 2022.
