Texas Mutual and VFIS of Texas sponsor wellness grants

We see it as our responsibility to protect our communities, businesses and Texans, especially those putting their lives on the line to serve others. That’s why, for the 12th year, we’ve partnered with VFIS of Texas to sponsor the 2026 emergency responder health & wellness grant program. The initiative is designed to help fire departments and non-profit EMS organizations across Texas safeguard the health of those who serve and protect our communities.
The impact on emergency responders
Our longstanding partnership with VFIS of Texas has made a significant impact. To date, the grant program has awarded over $3 million to Texas first responders. In 2025 alone, the program distributed over $420,000 to 120 departments, all dedicated to enhancing health and wellness initiatives.
How the grant works
Volunteer fire departments and non-profit EMS organizations that serve a population of 100,000 or less and are legally organized in Texas are eligible to apply for the grant.
Eligible organizations can apply for grants up to $5,000. Funding is based on financial need, and is intended to help organizations launch or enhance health and wellness programs, with special focus on injury and cancer prevention.
In the application, departments must apply for specific assistance with quotes for items or services they intend to purchase. If approved, grants operate as reimbursements. Grantees will be asked to purchase approved items and submit receipts.
Eligible items
The grant funds health and wellness and cancer prevention items. Examples of eligible expenses include:
- Physicals for department members
- Exercise equipment and weights
- Rehab equipment
- Nomex hoods
- Cancer screenings
- Decon cloths/wipes
- Washable gloves
- Extractors and dryers for turn-out gear

Applications are due by December 31, 2025. Award notifications will be made by January 31, 2026, and reimbursement documentation is due by May 1, 2026 for approved organizations.
