Texas Mutual has awarded over $5 million in safety and wellness grants and contributed nearly $700,000 towards first responder grants to help create safer, healthier work environments. In 2019, more than 1,200 businesses and first responders received funds to keep their people safe on the job. These grants are part of our commitment to the safety and wellness of all Texans through our community program, TXM for Texas.
Our policyholder safety and wellness grants are both re-evaluated on an annual basis and are not guaranteed each year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are directing funds into community assistance projects vital to COVID-19 relief and recovery across Texas, so we will not be offering safety or wellness grants in 2020. Visit texasmutual.com/coronavirus to learn about our community efforts and access resources available to all employers.
In 2019, we awarded $1.5 million to policyholders for the purchase of ergonomic, safety and industrial hygiene equipment to help reduce or eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses. Our safety grants provide qualified policyholder applicants with $1,500 to purchase approved safety equipment.
